Beginner bets

For beginners, the best thing to do is keep it simple. There are many upfront bets available that allow you to enjoy the roulette experience while you become more confident in your play. Try sticking to straight-up numbers or placing even money bets such as red/black, odd/even or 1-18/19-36.

Over time players may develop their own system of betting and best roulette strategy based on a plan. However, each new spin of the wheel produces a random result, and no system is totally definite to make a profit over a period of time.

French bets

On a European wheel layout only;

• Voisins du Zero – which means “neighbours of zero”, covers a total of 17 numbers with nine units of currency (or nine chips). Players making this bet are hoping that the ball lands in the section of the wheel near the zero. Any winning bet will see a return of at least twice the original stake.
• Tier – which means “Third”, covers the third of the wheel unequally opposite the zero section. 12 numbers are covered, with just six units of currency (or six chips). Any winning bet will pay the player three times their initial stake.
• Orphelins – The “Orphans” bet covers the two sections of the wheel not included in either the ‘Voisins du Zero’ or ‘Tier’ bets, and includes eight numbers. The Orphans are (literally) not covered by the other two bets.
• Any win on ‘Orphelins’ is guaranteed to payout at least double the original stake.
• This french bet is played with five units of currency (or five chips). All the chips placed in any french bet are splits.
• Voisin – 17 numbers, requires nine chips, Tier – 12 numbers, requires six chips and Orphelins – eight numbers, requires five chips.

Fun Fact: all the numbers on a Roulette Wheel add up to 6 6 6!

Neighbour / Section bets / Racetrack

A ‘neighbour bet’ covers five numbers and is a five chip bet.

Choose the number that you want to use for the neighbour bet, and it will include that number, and the two numbers on either side of it (as represented on the European Roulette Wheel), straight up. For example, if you wanted to play “21 and the neighbours”, your bet would include the two numbers on each side of the number 21, so your full bet would cover numbers 19, 4, 21, 2 and 25.

All neighbour bets are played with five units of currency (five chips) for this reason.

How to play roulette

The basic rules of roulette are fairly easy to understand – you place your bets on the table, the croupier spins the wheel in one direction and then sends the ball in the opposite direction. The ball then drops into a numbered slot, and you win or lose based on whether you guessed correctly. i.e. your chip or part of it covers the number where the ball has landed on the roulette wheel.

There are also ‘first third’, ‘second third’ and ‘third third’ bets as well as column bets 1, 2 and 3, each of these covers 12 numbers, respectively. i.e. a first third bet will cover numbers 1 – 12 (inclusive) but a first column bet will cover 1,4,7,10,13,16,19,22,25,31 and 34.
